Maria Schamis Turner
I am a Montreal artist who uses collage to play with and question visual conventions of human and animal forms, often venturing into the absurd. I published my first collage book, The Life and Design of Frédéric Le ShoeShoe in 2025 based on work I did during a solo residency at the Kolaj Institute in 2024.
A writer and editor with an MFA in creative nonfiction, I started exploring visual forms of self-expression after my father’s death in 2017. Unable to express my grief in words, I began working with mixed media including drawing, painting, and collage. I often create characters or scenes in my visual work that evoke narrative, and are accompanied by snippets of text.
Exhibitions
Eight of the original images from the The Life and Design of Frédéric Le ShoeShoe were exhibited at the Kolaj Institute in New Orleans, as part of the group show “Collage as Movement” from June 14 – August 31, 2025.
My collage, “Sadie Didn’t Take Well to Criticism,” was exhibited as part of the group show at the Kolaj Institute from Sept 10 to October 18, 2025.
Commissions
The Canadian band, Caution Horse, commissioned me to make art for their album cover and five of their songs. The first single was released April 17, 2026. The rest of the EP will be released later this year.
Talks
I was invited to give a talk on “Finding an Audience” at The Book as a Place of Collage Symposium on Friday, 3 October 2025, held by the Kolaj Institute as part of Volume 8 Montreal.
Residencies
I have done two solo art residencies, one at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts in August 2019, and one at the Kolaj Institute in May, 2024.
